New data being released as part of British Sandwich Week (Monday, 20 May to Sunday, 26 May) reveals chicken has remained the UK’s favourite sandwich filling for the fifth year running *.

According to data analysis from Kantar, which is being released today by the British Sandwich & Food to Go Association, almost half of all sandwiches bought have chicken as its main ingredient.

However, bacon has chicken running scared given the salty sandwich filling is also a firm favourite among Brits coming in a very close second place. In fact, in Wales, 30% of sandwich spend went on Bacon in the past year.

The top five sandwich fillings:

  1. Chicken
  2. Bacon
  3. Cheese
  4. Ham
  5. Tuna

Jim Winship, director of The British Sandwich & Food to Go Association said: “Every year, we’re keen to see which sandwich fillings are reigning supreme with our nation of sandwich lovers. Thanks to its versatility and presence in a vast array of sandwiches – from a classic club sandwich to a chicken and sweetcorn lunchtime favourite, it makes sense for the filling to be the nation’s favourite.

“However, this year is the first year that another filling is so close to taking the reign! Just like chicken, bacon is versatile, and whether it’s with lettuce and tomato, whipped up into a breakfast sandwich or placed with other sandwich meats – it’s always a tasty option.

“Sandwiches have been a staple in homes across the country, and further afield, for many years, and it’s promising to see that people are still choosing to spend and pick up a sandwich on the go.

“Every year the British Sandwich & Food to Go Association holds its event, British Sandwich Week to celebrate the nation’s devotion to clubs, subs, wraps, rolls, baguettes, baps, bagels, toasties, pittas, paninis and all their accompanying fillings. So, it’s always an honour to reveal that nation’s most-loved fillings.”
