“Upbringing,” co-written with Lalo Guzman and Josh Dorr, and produced by Lukas Scott, is not just a song but a significant artistic statement as Thompson’s debut as an independent artist. “I recently sat myself down and asked what do I want to say as an artist,” explains Thompson. “It took me a while but I realized I really want to be the kind of artist that is telling real stories about my life even when it’s dark and edgy.”
Thompson wasn’t in a great place when he had his first writing session with Guzman and Dorr earlier this year. A self-proclaimed therapy session quickly evolved into “Upbringing,” a hauntingly honest song that offers a raw, autobiographical glimpse into Thompson’s childhood and life earlier this year when he was in a really bad place and continuously making bad decisions.
“Writing this song was really like therapy to me,” continues Thompson. “This was one of the first times I went into the writing room and was really vulnerable and open about my life. I couldn’t be more proud that “Upbringing” was the result.”
